About this deal

Did I just hear you mentally yawn? It’s not like that at all. For the right audience, this book is anything but dry! The Natural History Museum has a range of botanical collections in their Herbarium. These include:

The book is -beautifully- illustrated throughout with mounted specimens shown in situ with their accession entries. It's very much like a museum trip in the reader's hands as well as abundant drawings and illustrations. I work in a healthcare setting in a laboratory (cancer biopsies mostly), but seeing the photographs of their labs with climate controlled storage and rooms full of files of plant material made my bionerd-y heart sing.A stimulating and informative book to be read (and re-read) from cover to cover as a source of enjoyment, enlightenment and inspiration.”—D. S. Ingram, joint lead author/editor of Science and the Garden Collecting: Select a typical plant and if possible two or three extra flowers to supplement the specimen and for dissection. Ensure the plant is healthy and collect average-sized leaves and flowers typical of the plant, not the biggest. Remove soil from the material. Photograph the plant habit and a close-up. Avoid collecting material in wet weather. Herbaria have also proven very useful as source of plant DNA for use in taxonomy and molecular systematics. Even ancient fungaria represent a source for DNA-barcoding of ancient samples. [20] National Depository of Living Systems |Digital Herbarium of the Moscow State University - Moscow University "Noah's Ark" Aaimts to create a multifunctional network storage of biological material. Sherwin Carlquist (1930 - 2021) is best known for significant contributions in plant systematics, wood anatomy, and island plant diversity. Over the course of his distinguished career, Carlquist published prolifically, with numerous books and over 300 research papers covering such topics as anatomy and systematics in many plant families, evolutionary and ecological theories in plant anatomy and structure, floral development, morphology, and island biogeography. Carlquist has also made significant contributions to taxonomy. Especially noteworthy are his investigations in Stylidiaceae, newly described species in Droseraceae, Grubbiaceae, and a new genus in Restionaceae, Alexgeorgea, known to be the only wind-pollinated plants bearing underground flowers.

This book is extremely detailed and niche so obviously isn't geared for those with only a passing interest in plants and/or fungi. It's more suited to those with a deeper scientific interest in this specific subject. I enjoyed it very much! Chinese National Herbarium, (Chinese Academy of Sciences) (PE) (Beijing, People's Republic of China) Narrator] In the Library and Archive, a history of the garden, of botanical science and exploration, through rare books, art and artefacts, truly international and at times, beautiful. The collection has the first ever book to use photographic illustrations.

A herbarium is a collection of preserved plants stored, catalogued and arranged systematically for study by both professional taxonomists (scientists who name and identify plants), botanists and amateurs. Elspeth Haston] In this building is 4,000 grey cabinets. But to me, those cabinets, you open the doors and you've got every single biome in there, you've got every single environment, you've got, whether it's tropical rain forests, whether it's alpine in Scotland or whether it's the Himalaya or the Savannah, we've got everything in those cabinets. So it's a tremendous place to work, to know that all of that environment is just here.

The audience for this niche will be well rewarded. The author includes several profiles of some of the more notable plant collectors around the world, and includes a history of the development of herbaria in the USA as well as other areas of the world. The anecdotes of the lives of those who devoted themselves to finding and preserving plants are written in a lively, authoritative way. Wood collection (xylarium)". www.kew.org. It seems many medical doctors centuries ago became botanists. One of my favourite stories in the book is about a man, Dampier, who not only documented and collected plants but also described nature including land, animals and water currents in wonderful detail. Another story which stands out is the rescue of pressed plants from a burning building by a passionate female botanist.
