These types of parenting books are often hard to get into and hard to finish, but this one was necessary and helpful to me for one of my children at this particular time of my life.

There’s nothing quite as irritating as being the parent of a “lazy” teenager— nagging, micromanaging and all. While a completely agree that we need to keep investigating gender differences both in brain biology, behavior and the like, and that such differences exist his approach was gross.Appearing like he's "too cool for school" means he doesn't need to face all this pressure, or have people find out he really isn't that smart. I found this book to be an incredibly useful tool for me as I LEARNED how to navigate my flawed interpretation of my son's inaction.

I enjoyed the audio version but also purchased the ebook so I can highlight it on my phone and a hard-copy in hopes that I can sneak it into my husband's TBRs. This book is a huge ray of hope for me, there's a saying that goes: "it takes a village to raise a child" however, to raise a teenager it surely takes more than just a village.If you’re thinking “well he doesn’t seem very stressed by it, that’s half the problem”, he is probably blocking it all out and hoping it will go away. They are struggling silently, in a world that is too competitive, surrounded by a perfectionistic culture, and because their brains develop later and differently from girls’ brains (and the school system is biased towards a learning style that suits girls more than boys in general- encouraged by sitting in rows, teacher led learning), the boys feel overwhelmed. This book was immediately relatable and not only guides you in seeing that your child is all right, but that you are too!

He explains why nagging and over-parenting simply exacerbates this issue, and how stepping back and giving boys more autonomy can help them become more self-directed and find their footing.This is a book for parents of teenage boys that aren’t in 100 AP classes, getting straight A’s, motivated to score 1500 on the SATs, or otherwise school uninterested. To be fair, I did get a couple of tips and insights that I will use, which is why I rated the book 3 stars. If you have a teenage boy with ADHD or a son who just lacks the focus to reach his academic potential, I wholeheartedly recommend this book to you.
