Nose: “wait, I’ve smelt this before…. Glendroach 12 ! It didn’t have the horrible funkiness I find in other blends…. that’s cool I thought. Raisins, sultanas, vague nuttiness.. very nice. The blended malt is said to have notes of fudge, cooked apples and cherries, and is designed as a session whisky to be drunk on its own or with cherry cola. Taking a sip, that fruit-forward flavor persists. This version seems to be a bit more “punched in” in terms of the saturation of those flavors than the original Famous Grouse edition (probably thanks to those sherry casks used in the finishing process). The first thing I get is actually a bit of orange citrus, followed by some melon and apple. On Ice It wasn’t until Matthew Gloag III inherited the business from William in 1896 that the company registered its first blended Scotch, the Brig o’ Perth. A year later, The Famous Grouse was released at the same time as The Grouse Brand. The Edrington Group owns the Famous Grouse brand as well as The Macallan, Cutty Sark and Highland Park. This Naked Grouse has a high proportion of spirit from Macallan & Highland Park. The Macallan bringing the sweet sherry influence, and Highland Park bringing a slightly malty, smoky sharpness.

Naked Malt Details

I like that there’s the bare minimum labeling on this bottle, and I like that they did a bit of work coming up with that embossed grouse design. Malt whisky continues to rise in popularity with consumers and, by changing our blended Scotch to a blended malt, we can use the individuality and character of single malts and create a whisky that stands out from the crowd,’ said Elaine Miller, global marketing manager for Naked Grouse. Originally, The Famous Grouse was priced lower than the Grouse Brand. In a little over 10 years, the reverse would be true thanks to the popularity of The Famous Grouse. As if to emphasise the family connection, it was Matthew III’s daughter, Phillippa, who drew the very first, and now famous, red grouse that we see on the bottle.

I can still taste that fruity aspect, but it’s more like dried apricots and orange slices at this point. Much less lemon or melon, which are lighter and weaker in intensity by comparison. I can also taste much more of the traditional scotch whisky flavors — specifically, that almost bread-like malted barley flavor with a touch of honey. On ice, this is significantly closer to the original Famous Grouse. You are responsible for all activities through your account. We’ve pulled it out of Famous Grouse, so it will be a brand in its own right,’ she said. ‘We are trying to make it as simple as possible by moving away from some of the stereotypes of whisky and doing something for older millennials.

Convention said Blended Malt matured and got its flavour from pre-used Bourbon casks. This got us thinking, what if instead we used first-fill sherry casks to add another layer of rich and fruity flavour to our unique blend of single malts? These are casks that have never held whisky, Naked Casks we call them. This liberating leap into the unknown didn’t just work, it was a joyful exuberance of flavour that changed the possibilities of whisky enjoyment! – Famous Grouse Naked Malt is available in 70cl at 40% ABV. In the US & S Africa it’s available in 75cl at 43% ABV.The Naked Malt blend, according to official tasting notes, has hints of buttery toffee and sweet spice on the nose, with notes of vanilla, stewed fruit and raisins on the palate with a rich and sherried spice finish, creating a contemporary spirit that gives consumers the freedom to enjoy their way. Consumers and bartenders are looking for something more unique, which is why we wanted to move the brand on and change it.’

While many sources claim the Famous Grouse story began in 1800, the story of Matthew Gloag & Sons didn’t start with the Gloags at all. Rather, it began with the Browns. When US Prohibition came into force in January 1920, the Scotch world was dismayed. Economic depression, coupled with high taxation, had forced a high reliance on export markets. However, as was the case with a handful of other blenders, the company’s distribution to markets close to the United States such as Canada, Latin America and the West Indies suddenly shot up. If some shipments made their way into the States, then so be it.

Usually, with a little bit of ice, the flavors in a fruity whiskey start to fade away… and in this case, that’s unfortunately happening a bit.
