A voice inside of me told me not to resist that, so I thought about how I’d feel if this really was the last record I was ever going to make and, if so, what would I make? It woke something up in me and I thought I’m going to go even deeper now and maybe create some healing out of this too.

They strip away the noise with an inventive brilliance. There is a post-punk adventure where they take a song down to a clipped hi-hat or another that is built around an inventive bass. They break the norm and their music is full of surprising and effective twists and turns that somehow manages to create a new landscape in guitar music. So many people at the party commented on the professionalism of the band, and their fantastic, eclectic mix of music. " From that perspective, the album is dedicated to everybody who wants to be free of something. Thankfully, I’m still here today and don’t really have an issue anymore, so I’m very grateful for that, but I’m also grateful for having had the experience.”

The song 3D Warrior is a fine example of lots of collaborators coming together, but then never actually meeting… Unfurling their origin story in conversation with NME, HotWax are like live wires off stage too, exuding a frenzied blend of mild anxiety and excitement as they talk over each other. When we broach their upcoming slot at The Strokes’ All Point East show in London this August, all three members rush to speak in wide-eyed bursts. “We almost feel guilty for being on the lineup poster,” says Sayers, laughing. “But equally, we want to relish the challenge: we’re currently unknown, and need to prove ourselves.”

When I’m writing music in album mode, certain feelings and moments become familiar and that’s when you know you’re on the right path. Everything starts gravitating towards the centre, the things you were really buzzing about get pushed to one side and you suddenly have this musical spine.” I’ve obviously tried working with different producers and know that my process is very different because I don’t turn up with something that’s finished. All of my collaborators go on a journey with me and don’t know where I’m going. I just know what I need, and when I’ve got enough material I’ll go away and do the alchemy. Then I looked at my AC converters and called on a good friend who’s got a mastering studio out here and he introduced me to Burl Audio equipment, which has been a massive help. Hotwax are ripping up the template and ripping up stages with a thrilling deconstruction of their grunge roots into a post-punk landscape. Chris Hite (percussion, drums, 1983-1985) : I only played with the band for about a year and a half. Bill was a much better drummer than I was at the time, and although he didn’t sing, his drumming was more solid.

Once you start releasing albums, you start touring and once you start touring you end up in a cycle of finishing a tour, recovering from that, doing a DJ tour, making a compilation and starting the next album. Sayers has been drumming before he learned his times tables, having been taught by a childminder at a young age. Sim-Savage and Sam, meanwhile, are childhood friends who have always had a firm grasp on their narrative. Before they met Sayers at music college in Brighton, they grew up in tandem, plotting local gigs, analysing YouTube videos of their heroes Karen O and Starcrawler’s Arrow de Wilde, and immersing themselves in Hastings’ tight-knit creative scene. “We literally had each other, and no one else,” affirms Sim-Savage. Sean Hennessy : Mike’s a great musician, and for me as a bass player to have him come in and comment on stuff and help with the sound, that was incredible. But, you know, at that point, we were in our late teens and early twenties, and…it felt normal and natural. I don’t think we were too overwhelmed by it. It was just kind of… cool . And Carol knew them, so it was like hanging out with some new friends. It worked out really well. And having him play on “Return” was kind of cool, with his Floyd Kramer style keyboard riffs in there. That was cool.
